Subject: On reopening of educational institutions after a prolonged closure
With the help of this letter I would like to draw the attention of the public on the concerns relating to reopening of educational institutions after a long closure. The pandemic has affected educational institutions worldwide, leading to the closures of almost all the schools, early childhood education services, universities and colleges.
New admissions have stopped, playschools have shut and students have dropped out. Numerous studies have shown how the digital divide has caused a faultline in India’s education systems. But now the reopening process has been started to restore the situation.
Online learning is a poor substitute for offline classes for the children as they can’t learn everything by themselves. Children also miss out on holistic learning which includes behavioural and social skills and physical and mental well-being. Children learn when they meet, communicate and interact with each other in real-life scenarios such as schools.
There are lots of benefits in bringing children back to classroom learning. Indian states need to urgently restart the schools and the focus should be on how to open schools safely.
